Nothing but superlatives roll of the tongue when contemplating the Maroon Bells - Snowmass Wilderness: the beautiful symmetry of the Maroon Bells and shimmering alpine lakes nestled at the feet of jagged peaks, six of which crest over 14,000 feet. The twin peaks of Maroon Bells are perhaps Colorado's most recognizable scene, and the surrounding wilderness is one of the most popular, both for good reason. When it comes to sheer mountain splendor, few areas compare with the Elk Mountains and Maroon Bells - Snowmass Wilderness.

Valleys in the Maroon Bells - Snowmass Wilderness offer an exhilarating mix of aspen groves, flower-speckled meadows, and dark forests of spruce and fir. Above timberline, scraggly krummholz are the only reminder of the lush lower forests, but bountiful displays of alpine wildflowers dazzle visitors in their stead. A description of this popular loop hike says, "An ambitious backpacking trip located in the beautiful Maroon Bells/Snowmass Wilderness that is routed over four mountain passes (West Maroon - 12,500 ft.; Frigid Air - 12,415 ft.; Trail Rider - 12,420 ft.; Buckskin - 12,500 ft.); variety of terrain encompasses scenic forests, mid to late summer wildflowers, challenging river crossings, and provides spectacular views of the Maroon Bells and numerous other peaks of the Elk Mountain Range." We won't hike the entire 26 miles of the loop trail, but we will improve the experience of those who are doing the full hike. And we'll spend a week in the beauty of the peaks surrounded by wildflowers. |

We'll meet Saturday evening and then hoist our backpacks on Sunday for a five-mile hike to the basecamp. The work project is trail maintenance from West Maroon Pass toward Frigid Air Pass. Base camp will consist of a group area with the kitchen, and an eating area. Participants will set up their tents in the area surrounding the common area. |
|
The trail work will consist of closing braided trails, improving drainage in wet sections and improving the trail tread. There are a variety of tasks each day, and one full day off to explore the wilderness, climb a peak, swim in a lake or read a book under the magnificent sky! This trip outside Aspen is truely a Rocky Mountain High -- our basecamp will be near 11,000-feet. This trip is suitable for beginners who are in good shape, as well as experienced backpackers who want to experience one of Colorado's premier wildernesses. |
