John Muir referred to the Sierra Nevada as "the most beautiful of all the mountain chains" or, more poetically, "the range of light." The Desolation Wilderness, located just west of Lake Tahoe, contains 63,960 acres of subalpine and alpine forest, bald granite peaks, dramatic cliffs and glacially-formed valleys and more than 100 lakes. The Desolation Wilderness takes its name from the barren, rocky basins and gnarly old-growth conifers that characterize its heights. The week starts with a four mile backpack, where we’ll set up a basecamp near Maude Lake. The Eldorado National Forest will provide pack animal support to carry tools, group food and kitchen supplies. Our service project is finishing up construction on a trail causeway that we started in 2009 in a beautiful meadow near Maude Lake. This will involve digging trenches to place fallen trees, moving the fallen trees to their permanent location, and raising the trail with natural resources in the area such as rock, dirt and fines. If we complete the causeway, we will spend the remainder of the week clearing trails, installing and improving drainage structures, improving tread condition, and fixing problem areas. On our off day, we can explore the wilderness, swim, fish, or dayhike up to the pass for sweeping views. This project features a vegetarian menu.
