A powerful and inspiring landscape, the Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size; 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and a mile deep. Located in northern Arizona and carved by the powerful Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is recognized primarily by its exposed geologic strata, layer upon layer, representing one of the most complete records of geological history that can be seen anywhere in the world. Although first afforded Federal protection in 1893 as a Forest Reserve and later as a National Monument, Grand Canyon did not achieve National Park status until 1919, three years after the creation of the National Park Service. Today, the Grand Canyon is considered among the crown jewels of our National Park system, and one of the natural wonders of the world largely because of its natural features.

This service project will focus on spring cleanup and general maintenance of the Indian Garden campground. Located a 4.5 mile backpack down the Bright Angel Trail, Indian Garden is a stopover point for groups traveling farther into the canyon bottom and points beyond. Heavy use on this main corridor site requires constant attention and upkeep. We'll provide the muscle to get the camp site ready for canyon visitors. Free time activities include hikes to the bottom of the canyon to visit the Colorado River, and enjoying the magnificent scenery of this natural wonder of the world.
