The vast Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, nearly two million acres in size, encompasses the large peninsula south of Anchorage, Alaska. The refuge, characterized by diverse habitats covered with high, dense vegetation, was established to conserve moose, bears, mountain goats, Dall sheep, wolves and other furbearers, salmonoids and other fish, waterfowl and other migratory and nonmigratory birds. Due to this variety, the Refuge is considered by many visitors to represent Alaska in miniature. As a protected wildlife sanctuary, Kenai NWR fulfills international treaty obligations of the United States with respect to fish and wildlife and their habitats, ensures water quality and necessary water quantity within the Refuge and provides opportunities for scientific research, interpretation, environmental education, land management training and outstanding opportunities for fish and wildlife-oriented recreation. Our service project is conducting trail maintenance on the remote Cottonwood Creek Trail, which winds into the Refuge mountains on the south shore of Skilak Lake, one of the two large fresh water lakes on the inland peninsula. We'll spend the week tent camping on Skilak Lake at the mouth of Cottonwood Creek, allowing us easy access to work on the trail that hunters and hikers use to recreate on the Refuge. It provides easy access and close proximity to the upland mountain system which affords vast, scenic views of the predominant boreal forest below. **Note: Participants on Alaska projects must have paid for their airfare at least two months before the start date and furnish this information to the leaders. We have discovered that folks who do not have firm travel plans by this time often cancel, and these projects are hard to fill at the last minute.
