The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests extend from north central Colorado to central Wyoming. The Forests encompass portions of many mountain ranges including the Gore Range, Flat Tops, Parks Range, Medicine Bow Mountains, Sierra Madre, and Laramie Range. There are 10 designated Wilderness Areas on the Forest. The Brush Creek/Hayden Ranger District provides access to unlimited recreational activities in a wide variety of settings. The district is uniquely situated on the northern tip of the Southern Rockies where the mountains meet the plains. The Platte River Wilderness, adjacent to our campsite, is located in southern Wyoming, just north of the Colorado line, about 50 miles southwest of Laramie, WY. There is something for everyone here; from hiking above tree line to the top of Medicine Bow Peak (12,013 feet) to float fishing blue ribbon waters on the North Platte River. The area retains a true western flair with cowboys and cowgirls, high mountain peaks, and beautiful rivers and lakes. Our service project is located near the confluence of the three forks of Big Creek on the Medicine Bow National Forest. The confluence is in a large open meadow complex just above Big Creek Canyon. The volunteer crew will complete trail construction from a new trailhead/bridge to the mouth of Big Creek Canyon and tie in with the existing trail. The crew will also complete general trail maintenance on the remaining 4 miles of the Big Creek Trail. Our crew will camp at Six Mile Gap Campground which affords easy access to the North Platte River. Modern pit toilets and drinking water are available at campground. This project is suitable for beginning campers and includes active trail construction work with hand tools. |
