Wilderness First Aid is a comprehensive lesson in how to react, respond, and save life in remote, life-threatening situations. Everyone who spends time in the backcountry should be prepared. Fast paced and hands-on, this two-day course covers a wide range of wilderness medicine topics. This course is sponsored by Wilderness Volunteers, and given by the Wilderness Medicine Institute/NOLS. Days are filled with dynamic lessons and exciting, realistic scenarios to best model the kind of medical situations you might face in backcountry venues, but will be great experience for front-country accidents too. Lecture and discussion, practical exercise and outdoor scenarios help students gain confidence, and encourage the development of critical decision making skills. Upon successful course completion you will earn a WMI of NOLS wilderness medicine certification. This course is pre-approved by such organizations as: the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other governmental agencies. This course may also be used to recertify Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness Advanced First Aid and Wilderness EMT (wilderness portion only) certifications. You must possess a valid certification from WMI, SOLO or WMA to recertify through this course. We will camp at Coronado Campground in Bernalillo, New Mexico and provide transportation from the airport to the campsite, and to the training each day, Friday and Saturday. Food is provided. You must show up on Thursday afternoon/evening as class starts promptly at 8 AM Friday morning. Temperatures are moderate this time of year with average highs in the 70s/lows in the 40s-50s. Lectures will be held at the Southwest Fire Training Center, and scenarios will take place indoors and outside. The fee for this course is $175 which includes the tuition to WMI, meals & snacks, campground fees, and transportation from the airport.
