The Humboldt-Toiyabe's spectacular 6.3 million acres makes it the largest national forest in the lower 48 states. Located throughout Nevada and a small portion of eastern California, the forest offers year-round recreation of all types. The Table Mountain Wilderness is located in the center of the mountainous state along the Monitor Range, rising above 10,000 feet and providing a home for one of Nevada's largest mule deer herds and a well-established elk herd. Large stands of aspen over much of the mountain oasis are unusual in this region of central Nevada. Some of the aspens are carved with dates dating back as early as 1907 and well-preserved samples of Basque sheepherder art. Over ten miles long and several miles wide, open spaces and breath taking scenery make Table Mountain Wilderness one of Central Nevada’s most desirable destinations.
We'll spend our week on Clear Creek Canyon on the northeast side of the Monitor Range. The creek supports a healthy trout stream and the Clear Creek Trail provides day hike access into the Wilderness and to the top of Table Mountain. Its lush riparian areas support a wide variety of plants and animals. Our service project is trail maintenance on the Clear Creek Trail which leads to Clear Lake. We'll drive to a remote backcountry campsite near the wilderness boundary and set up a tent and vehicle camp alongside Clear Creek. From camp, we'll make daily forays up the trail following the creek -- cutting back overgrown vegetation, and repairing the trail surface as we go. On our free day, we can hike up our choice of several canyons that converge in this area, visit the lake and summit the Mountain or one of the numerous peaks that hover above. The area offers spectacular expansive views.
