Cape Cod National Seashore, MA (Nov 3rd - Nov 9th 2019)

  • Map

The Cape Cod peninsula extends 60 miles into the Atlantic Ocean. Located on the outer portion of the Cape, Cape Cod National Seashore is 44,600 acres encompass a rich mosaic of marine, estuarine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. These systems and their associated habitats reflect the Cape's glacial origins, dynamic natural processes, and at least 9,000 years of human activity. The great Outer Beach described by Thoreau in the 1800s is protected within the national seashore. Forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod's past and continuing ways of life. Swimming beaches and walking and biking trails beckon today's visitors.

Our service project will provide much-needed manpower to help eliminate fire hazards within the Cape Cod Seashore. Our volunteer group will perform manual clearing of vegetation (native and non-native), will engage in cultural landscape maintenance, as well as ecosystem health and foresty resiliency objectives. The plants our group will target include black locust, bittersweet, honeysuckle and privet from the upland/marsh interface areas. The areas we'll work in include Fort Hill, Skiff Hill and Penniman areas around Eastham, MA and participants should be prepared to hike ~4 miles each day depending on which bunk/dorm we get placed at.

Give something back with Wilderness Volunteers in one of the most scenic shores in the U.S.

This project is rated as a strenuous project.
