The 76,586 acre Indian Peaks Wilderness is part of the Front Range: a mountain range that runs from Casper, Wyoming and Pueblo, Colorado. The Indian Peaks area became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1978. It is home to elk, mule deer, moose, mountain lions, black bears, coyotes, foxes, beavers, and marmots. The Wilderness is bordered on the north by Rocky Mountain National Park. Much of the Indian Peaks Wilderness is at high elevations with summits that peek through the clouds at over 13,000ft.

The popular Roaring fork trail has seen successful Wilderness Volunteers work in 2017 in the form of two new bridge crossings near Watanga Lake. This trail begins directly above the always full Roaring Fork and Moraine Park Campgrounds and the first mile of this trail, located in the Indian Peaks Wilderness is steep, dry and needs some heavy maintenance. This group will help with trail maintenance, install check steps, and install/clean drainage features, clean up the trail corridor. Volunteers will be able to car camp at the campground and a short but steep hike will give them access to the project site. The camping area is one of the highest demand camps in the district located on the shores of Lake Granby and in a spectacular place to enjoy all that Colorado offers for recreation.

We highly recommend that those coming from low elevation (anything below about 5,000 feet) plan to come out an extra couple of days before the trip to acclimate to the elevation before the trip starts. This is one of the easiest ways to prevent altitude sickness and make sure your trip is enjoyable. If you need ideas on things to do and see before the trip you can contact your leaders. If you have had elevation related issues in the past be sure to check with your doctor before coming.

This project is rated as a strenuous project.
