Located less than one hour south of Burley, City of Rocks National Reserve is one of Southern Idaho's best backcountry adventures. The 14,407-acre Reserve is situated at the south end of the Albion Mountains and features towering granite pinnacles, fins, and domes. City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park are part of the original territory of Numic speaking Shoshone and Paiute people.
Emigrants of the California Trail (1843-1882) describe the rocks here in vivid detail as "a city of tall spires," "steeple rocks," and "the silent city." Today, this backcountry byway attracts rock climbers, campers, hikers and those with the spirit of adventure. There's inspirational scenery, exceptional opportunities for geologic study, and historic landmarks awaiting your discovery.
Join us for a week of fulfilling work as we perform trail work tasks, replace check steps, clean drains, brush trail, and replace a retaining wall on Flaming Rock Trail. This project sits around 6,000' elevation and volunteers should be prepared for a steep trail in some sections. We'll spend the week based out of the secluded Juniper group campground with amenities like bathrooms and water. Volunteers should be prepared to hike 2-3-miles one way daily to and from the job site. During down time, volunteers will have the opportunity to go hiking, fishing, and possibly unwind in nearby hot springs.
Please note: Due to COVID-19, Wilderness Volunteers is operating our 2021 project schedule under our Modified Project Procedures for Volunteers. These project guidelines will be revised as needed. Please check back often for the latest version.
Due to additional COVID-19 precautions, we are prohibiting mixed household volunteer carpooling (with volunteers outside of the same household traveling in the same vehicle) to projects until further notice. Exceptions to this policy (eg close friends traveling together) will need to be discussed with/pre-approved by the office and will require additional precautionary steps for the individuals involved. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
This project is rated as a strenuous project.
