The 76,586 acre Indian Peaks Wilderness is part of the Front Range: a mountain range that runs from Casper, Wyoming and Pueblo, Colorado. The Indian Peaks area became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1978. It is home to elk, mule deer, moose, mountain lions, black bears, coyotes, foxes, beavers, and marmots. The Wilderness is bordered on the north by Rocky Mountain National Park. Much of the Indian Peaks Wilderness is at high elevations with summits that peek through the clouds at over 13,000ft.
Join us for a week of fulfilling work in Colorado's beautiful Indian Peaks Wilderness. Our project will focus on the Buchannan Pass Trail that has two crossings that are in disrepair. This project would involve one log bridge construction project and one stream ford construction. In the early parts of the season, these crossings are dangerous with high runoff and create hazardous conditions for anyone visiting the popular Indian Peaks Wilderness. This backpacking project will have our volunteer crew setting up a basecamp 5 miles and 2000' feet up on Monarch Lake Trailhead. Daily hiking commutes are around ~.25-miles oneway.
Please note: Due to COVID-19, Wilderness Volunteers is operating our 2021 project schedule under our Modified Project Procedures for Volunteers. These project guidelines will be revised as needed. Please check back often for the latest version.
Due to additional COVID-19 precautions, we are prohibiting mixed household volunteer carpooling (with volunteers outside of the same household traveling in the same vehicle) to projects until further notice. Exceptions to this policy (eg close friends traveling together) will need to be discussed with/pre-approved by the office and will require additional precautionary steps for the individuals involved. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
We highly recommend that those coming from low elevation (anything below about 5,000 feet) plan to come out an extra couple of days before the trip to acclimate to the elevation before the trip starts. This is one of the easiest ways to prevent altitude sickness and make sure your trip is enjoyable. If you need ideas on things to do and see before the trip you can contact your leaders. If you have had elevation related issues in the past be sure to check with your doctor before coming.
This project is rated as a strenuous project.
