The Gifford Pinchot National Forest is one of the oldest National Forests in the United States. Included as part of the Mount Rainier Forest Reserve in 1897, this area was set aside as the Columbia National Forest in 1908. It was renamed the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in 1949. Located in southwest Washington State, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest encompasses 1,312,000 acres of douglas-fir, western hemlock, red cedars, ponderosa, and lodgepole pines forests. It also protects mountains, river valleys, waterfalls, wildernesses, and includes the 110,000-acre Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, established by Congress in 1982. The Gifford Pinchot’s streams also provide habitat for threatened fish species, including Chinook and coho salmon, steelhead, and bull trout.

Join us for a week of trail work and tread work in the stunning Mt. Adams Wilderness. With the help of pack support, we'll hike in ~ 5-miles and set up our base camp then spend the week hiking 1-mile to our job site where our crew will work to improve the tread, maintain/clean drainages, fill in ruts, install/clean check dams, and brush the trail. On the day off volunteers can hike to the base of Mt. Adams or other surrounding hikes, look for local wildlife, fish, relax, and much more.

Please note: Due to COVID-19, Wilderness Volunteers is operating our 2021 project schedule under our Modified Project Procedures for Volunteers. These project guidelines will be revised as needed. Please check back often for the latest version.

Due to additional COVID-19 precautions, we are prohibiting mixed household volunteer carpooling (with volunteers outside of the same household traveling in the same vehicle) to projects until further notice. Exceptions to this policy (eg close friends traveling together) will need to be discussed with/pre-approved by the office and will require additional precautionary steps for the individuals involved.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

This project is rated as a strenuous hike in/out; strenuous rating for the work.
