With over 400 miles of surveyed underground passageways, Kentucky's Mammoth Cave is a geologic wonder and the longest known cave system in the world. Mammoth Cave National Park was designated as a National Park in 1941 and covers more than 52,000 acres above ground as well as the extensive labyrinth of subterranean passageways. It is home to an extensive variety of flora and fauna with over 130 species documented in the caves alone. The caves also feature a vast array of geologic features including stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, travertine dams, and several types of intricate gypsum formations like "gypsum flowers."
Our service project will be to help maintain either Sal Hollow or Dry Prong backcountry trails. Both trails are heavily used equestrian trails that are in need of some maintenance. Volunteers will likely begin working from the campground trailhead the first day and then hike further each day back to where they completed work the day before to start work again. Volunteers should expect to hike up to approximately 5 miles each day. Join us for a trailwork project with both scenic daily hikes into the backcountry and front country camping amenities!
Please note: Due to COVID-19, Wilderness Volunteers is operating our 2021 project schedule under our Modified Project Procedures for Volunteers. These project guidelines will be revised as needed. Please check back often for the latest version.
Due to additional COVID-19 precautions, we are prohibiting mixed household volunteer carpooling (with volunteers outside of the same household traveling in the same vehicle) to projects until further notice. Exceptions to this policy (eg close friends traveling together) will need to be discussed with/pre-approved by the office and will require additional precautionary steps for the individuals involved. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
This project is rated as a strenuous project.
For insurance reasons, WV cannot organize participants' transportation. Due to COVID-19 precautions, WV prohibits carpooling for volunteers outside of the same household. For more information, please refer to the most current edition of the Modified Project Protocols for Volunteers.
